Island on its way towards a sustainable world
Content
In southeast Sweden, Mörbylånga municipality has taken the initiative to carry out an active effort to test new technology in the field of sustainable development in their municipality. Over many years, the municipality has worked with a sustainable development, and have decided to be a fossil fuelfree municipality by 2025. The goal is to stop using oil-based fuels (coal, oil, gasoline and diesel) in the municipality and to produce as much or more renewable energy as biofuel, solar and wind power, as they need and use by themselves. If the municipality then has any fossil fuels still in any activity, it will be compensated by producing the corresponding amount of renewable energy and selling it to users outside the municipality. In other words, there will be no net carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels from Mörbylånga municipality.
During this transition period, the municipality welcomes energyefficient buildings and, therefore, will refund the building fee if a potential homeowner chooses to build a zero-power house, a passive house or a mini power building at the presentation of an approved certificate and an approved final notice for building permits. In addition to this work, Mörbylånga municipality has taken another step, and joined "The Smart Islands Initiative" for the climate. In this initiative, islands are seen as extra suitable for testing and using new technologies in the transition work, as they are geographically easy to define and evaluate. The declaration of intent for this project was signed in solemn forms in March 2017, covering several areas linked to sustainable development, such as energy, transport and mobility, as well as water and waste management. Over 200 local and regional authorities support the initiative.
